Nationally-Ranked Bulldogs Host Indiana, Villanova

BIG WEEK AT THE BOWL: The Butler men's soccer team posted a convincing 3-0 win over Brown on Sunday at the Butler Bowl to remain undefeated at home on the season. The match was the first of three in a row at home for the Bulldogs. Defending national champ Indiana visits on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and Villanova visits on Saturday 7 p.m. The match against Villanova will be Butler's BIG EAST opener. The Bulldogs will play three of their next four matches at home.
TOP 25:  Butler continues to climb in the national polls, and the Bulldogs have cracked the "Top 25" in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Poll for the first time this season.  The Bulldogs, with five wins in their first seven matches, checked in this week at No. 23 in the latest national poll.  Butler has a victory over #7 Louisville this season, and the Bulldogs' lone setback came to #24 Northwestern.  Soccer America has Butler ranked at No. 21 this week.

The Bulldogs were able to shake off a 2-0 loss to No. 24 Northwestern, their first loss of the season, with a strong 3-0 victory over Brown. Freshman David Goldsmith was a valuable contributor for the Bulldogs, scoring two goals. Junior Brandon Fricke scored Butler's other goal of the afternoon. Senior Jon Dawson was strong in goal once again, finishing with three saves en route to his fourth victory of the season.
HOOSIERS COME TO VISIT: The Hoosiers lead the all-time series with Butler 21-3. There has been one tie in series history. Butler last beat the Hoosiers in Bloomington in 2010 by a score of 4-1. Former Butler head coach Kelly Findley, now at North Carolina State, was at the helm for that victory, as well as the 2009 2-1 victory in Bloomington. Butler's only other victory in the series came in the NCAA Tournament in 1995 in Bloomington. The Bulldogs were able to hold off the Hoosiers to win 1-0 and advance. Indiana last played at the Butler Bowl on October 12, 2011. Indiana won 1-0.
BIG EAST OPENER: Villanova comes to town on Saturday at 7 p.m. for Butler's first match of BIG EAST play. The Wildcats were ousted in last year's Big East Tournament by UCONN in the quarterfinal round and were not one of the 48 teams named to the NCAA College Cup field.
GOLDSMITH'S RIGHT FOOT: Goldsmith's two goals against Brown gave him a total of five on the season, all of which have been scored in the last two Butler home games. Goldsmith is currently tied for second in the BIG EAST with 11 total points, tied for second in points per game, tied for second in goals and tied for second in goals per game.The Bristol, England native continues to be an offensive bright spot for the Bulldogs.
FRICKE HONORED: After his performance against Brown, Fricke was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this week for the first time. Fricke is the third Butler player to be named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
BULLDOG BITS: Junior Zach Steinberger and sophomores Vincent Mitchell and Jeff Adkins are all tied for fifth in the BIG EAST in total assists with three. Mitchell also places second in the conference in assists per game. As a team, Butler is tied for second in total goals with 13 and tied for third in goals per game.
