Bulldogs Drop Non-Conference Match At Evansville
EVANSVILLE, IND. - Evansville scored two goals in the final 20 minutes of the match to secure a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over visiting Butler in a non-conference match at Arad McCutchan Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The setback snapped Butler's three-match winning streak.
Mark Gonzalez broke a 1-1 tie and scored the game-winner for the host Purple Aces with a short shot past Butler goalkeeper Jon Dawson at 71:44. The Aces added an insurance goal seven minutes later when Dylan Terry found the back of the net off a rebound shot.
Butler (7-2-1), ranked 16th this week in the NSCAA national poll, jumped in front at 27:29 of the opening period. Brandon Fricke scored on a header off of a Jeff Adkins' corner kick to give the Bulldogs the early advantage. It was Fricke's second goal of the season.
But the Aces tied the match shortly before halftime on a goal by Nate Opperman.
The Aces (6-2-1) finished with a 19-13 edge in shots for the match, though both squads posted nine shots on goal. Adkins led Butler with five shots, including three shots on goal. Goalkeeper Jon Dawson, who went the distance for the Bulldogs, finished with six saves.
Butler will return to BIG EAST play with a home match against DePaul on Saturday, Oct. 5. That contest at the Butler Bowl will start at 7 p.m.
