Brandon Fricke Earns BIG EAST Honor
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Junior Brandon Fricke, who may have scored Butler's biggest goal of the season, has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. The award was one of four announced by the conference office on Monday (Nov. 11).
In a must-win situation for the Bulldogs, Fricke scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute to lift Butler past Xavier, 2-1, in the final regular season match for both teams. His shot from five yards out off a free kick by teammate Jeff Adkins secured a berth for the Bulldogs in the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship.
Fricke also helped spark a Butler defensive effort that held the Musketeers scoreless for the final 55 minutes of the match. The Bulldogs limited Xavier to just three shots in the final 45 minutes.
In addition to Fricke's honor, the BIG EAST recognized Art Garza of DePaul as Offensive Player of the Week, Rafael Diaz of St. John's as Goalkeeper of the Week and Mac Steeves of Providence ast Rookie of the Week.
Butler (10-7-1), the No. 6 seed, will begin play in the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship at No. 3 seed Xavier (10-6-2) on Tuesday, Nov. 12. That first round match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. (ET) at the XU Soccer Complex.
