Bulldogs Move On to Semifinal Round of BIG EAST Tournament
MOVING ON: The Butler men's soccer team posted its second straight victory over Xavier Tuesday night by a 1-0 score in the first round of the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship. The last time the Bulldogs were on a winning streak, they beat Brown, Indiana and Villanova on September 22, 25 and 28. Butler moves on to the semifinal round on Friday and faces the No. 2 seed, Marquette. The two semifinal games and the championship game will be played at Philadelphia's PPL Park.
Butler finished the 2013 regular season with a 3-5-1 record on the road. The Bulldogs were 7-2-0 at home.
GOLDSMITH SCORES GAME WINNER: Freshman David Goldsmith scored the only goal of the match Tuesday night in the 28th minute. His 12th goal of the season came off an assist from senior Jordan Burt. Goldsmith, a Bristol, England native, leads Butler in goals scored this season and leads the conference in both goals and goals per game.
SEASON CONTINUES FOR SENIORS: Twice now, the Bulldogs have had their backs against the wall, and twice they have come away victorious. After a victory Friday night over Xavier which vaulted Butler into the conference tournament, the Bulldogs won again to move on in the tournament. This year's seniors, Jon Dawson, Austin Oldham, Jordan Burt, Adam Glanzer and Blake Leyden, have earned the right to keep playing. During their time with the Bulldogs, the group has amassed a 38-24-12 record and played in 284 games.
BIG EAST TOURNAMENT DETAILS: A match against No. 2 seed Marquette awaits on Friday. The first semifinal game features No. 1 seed Georgetown facing off against No. 4 seed Providence. That game will start at 6 p.m. Butler and Marquette play in the second match of the night, starting at 8:30 p.m. The site for the three remaining BIG EAST Tournament games is PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, home to Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union. The tournament championship game will be played at 12:30 p.m. ET on Nov. 17 and will be televised on FOX Sports 1. The two semifinal games will be streamed online via BIGEAST.com.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING: The Bulldogs rank second in the BIG EAST in total points, goals and goals per game. Butler also is second in the conference with 31 assists on the season. Additionally, the Bulldogs average 1.63 assists per game, good for third in the conference. Defensively, Butler is second in the conference in saves with 92 on the season. Butler averages 863 fans per contest, good for third in the conference behind only St. John's and Creighton.
BULLDOG BITS: Sophomore Jeff Adkins ranks second in the conference with 54 shots. Adkins is also holds the conference lead with ten assists on the season. Goldsmith leads the BIG EAST with 12 goals. He is also tied for first in the conference in total points and fourth in points per game. Junior Zach Steinberger is eighth in the conference with 16 points on the season. The junior is also tied for eighth in the conference in goals with six scored. Sophomore Vincent Mitchell is tied for tenth with five goals on the season.
