Young Bulldogs Battle Cincinnati To a 0-0 Deadlock
Aug. 21, 2007
Goalkeepers Fabian Knopfler and Nick Hegeman combined on a shutout and helped Butler to a 0-0 tie against host Cincinnati in a men's soccer exhibition match at Gettler Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Tuesday (Aug. 21). The 90-minute contest was the first preseason test for both squads.
Knopfler, a transfer from Reutlingen, Germany, played just over 56 minutes in the contest and recorded one save. Hegeman, a junior, played nearly 33 and a half minutes and finished with three saves. The two faced nine total shots.
"I was pleased with the performance of our goalkeepers and with our defense overall," said Butler head coach Kelly Findley after the match. "I felt we were organized and everyone who got into the match played well."
Findley used 17 different players in the contest. Sophomore Boris Gatzky, a transfer from Gardner-Webb, led the Bulldogs with three shots, including one shot on goal. Junior Frank Patano, last year's scoring leader, and sophomore Kyle VondenBenken each added a shot on goal.
"Overally, I felt we performed well for the first time out against a good team," added Findley. "We created some great opportunities' we just didn't finish. But our effort was good."
The Bulldogs will play a second exhibition match at home against Xavier on Saturday, August 25. The match at Butler's Varsity Field is slated for 4 p.m.
