Butler scored three goals in 14 minutes and then held on with a strong defensive effort to defeat the Alumni Team, 3-1, in an exhibition match at the Butler Bowl on Saturday, August 23. The victory was Butler's second in exhibition play in preparation for the upcoming fall campaign.
The Bulldogs trailed 1-0 in the first half, before senior Eduardo Garcia found the back of the net in the 30th minute. Five minutes later, sophomore Kyle Pateros gave Butler the lead for good with a goal and junior Boris Gatzky closed the scoring with a goal in the 44th minute.
The two teams played to a deadlock in the second half, despite strong play from both teams.
More than 20 former Butler players, including several former pros, turned out to participate in the match. The Alumni Team was coached by former player Steve Peck, head coach at 2006 national champion Jefferson College. Many of the alumni players will return to Butler for an Alumni vs. Alumni game on Oct. 25, during Homecoming weekend.
Butler will open the regular season at the Louisville Tournament on Saturday, August 30. The Bulldogs will face James Madison in the first round of the four-team tournament.
