Eastern Illinois Slips Past Butler, 1-0

Sept. 1, 2004

Freshman Joel Del Toro came off the bench to score a first half goal and help lead host Eastern Illinois to a 1-0 victory over Butler at Lakeside Field on Wednesday, Sept. 1. The match was the season-opener for both squads. Del Toro took a pass from teammate Jimmy Klatter and slipped a header past Butler goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt in the 33rd minute of the game. It wound up as the only score of the match and gave Eastern Illinois a second consecutive victory over the Bulldogs. Butler out-shot the Panthers, 17-14, and had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Newcomers Roberto Gallo and Tim Blake led the Bulldogs with three shots apiece, and each had a shot on goal. Junior John Mariscalco and newcomer Jason Kieffer had Butler's other two shots on goal. Reinhardt went the distance in goal for the Bulldogs and finished with five saves. Mike Sims picked up the shutout with four saves for Eastern Illinois. The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 4, against Northwestern in the opening round of the Lakeside Invitational. Butler will face Iona on Sunday, Sept. 5, in the final round of the tournament.
