Sept. 4, 2004
Junior Scott Olsen scored a goal early in the match and it proved to be all that Butler needed to stop host Northwestern, 1-0, in the first round of the Adidas North Shore Classic at Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex in Evanston, Ill., on Saturday, Sept. 4. The victory lifted Butler to 1-1-0 on the young season, while Northwestern fell to 1-1-0. Olsen tallied Butler's first goal of the 2004 campaign in the 17th minute on the contest. He took a cross from senior Andrew Pancio and slipped a shot past Northwestern goalkeeper Justin Pines. It was Olsen's 11th career goal and Pancio's 15th career assist. Butler's defense took over from that point. Senior Evan Reinhardt, Butler's starting goalkeeper, had five saves before receiving a red card in the 68th minute. Sophomore Frank Peabody took over and maintained the shutout, stopping a Northwestern shot on goal in the final minute of the match. The Wildcats out-shot Butler, 11-5, and had a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. The host squad also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Gerardo Alvarez paced the Wildcats with three shots on goal, while freshman David Roth had a pair, including one that Butler senior David Wyrick cleared off the line. Senior Cory Edgington led Butler with two shots on goal, while junior Roberto Gallo added one. The Bulldogs will face Iona in the second round of the tournament at 12 noon on Sunday, Sept. 5.
