Forward Kristoffer Aarskog scored his second goal of the match with less than seven minutes remaining to lead Florida Atlantic to a 3-2 victory over Butler in the first round of the UCF/adidas Kickoff Classic in Orlando, Fla., on Friday, Sept. 10. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 1-3 on the young season, while the match was the season-opener for Florida Atlantic.
Aarskog?s game-winner came two minutes after junior Roberto Gallo tied the match with his first Butler goal. The transfer midfielder took a throw-in from junior Scott Olsen and slipped a shot past Florida Atlantic goalkeeper Anders Granstad.
Florida Atlantic jumped in front on a goal by Samuel-Eli Dzegede just two minutes into the contest. But the Bulldogs tied the match 17 minutes later when Olsen served the ball to teammate David Wyrick, who tallied his first 2004 goal. The two squads ended the first half tied at 1-1.
Aarskog gave Florida Atlantic the lead with an unassisted goal at 54:30. That lead stood until Gallo tied the match at 81:21.
Butler had a commanding 19-8 lead in shots in the match. Senior Cory Edgington led the Bulldogs with four shots, while Olsen, Gallo and sophomore Matt Soldato each had three shots apiece. Soldato and Wyrick each had two of Butler?s nine shots on goal. The Bulldogs had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Butler goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt faced five shots on goal and finished with two saves.
The Bulldogs will face host Central Florida in the tournament?s final round on Sunday, Sept. 12.
