Butler was able to win in overtime for the first time this season on Sunday as Dustin Mares found the net with less than three minutes to play, sending the Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory against Northern Illinois at the Huskies' home tournament in DeKalb, Ill.
With Sunday's win, Butler has a winning record once again at 3-1-2 on the season to date.
Mares' goal ended the match at the 107-minute mark and was after a throw in deflected off of a NIU player and got past the Husky goalkeeper for the win. The goal was Mares' second of the season so far but came on just his fourth shot of the year.
The game was sent into overtime in the first place because of Boris Gatzky's clutch free kick with just eight minutes to play in regulation. Butler was down 1-0 for a majority of the match before Gatzy was able to net his second goal of the year.
NIU actually out-shot the Bulldogs 15-9 on the match and only four different Butler strikers recorded shots on the day. But Gatzky and Mares' shots were the ones that mattered.
Fabian Knopfler was once again in goal for Butler and recorded five saves in 107 minutes of work on Sunday.
Butler's third win of the year also marks the end of regular season tournament play for the Bulldogs, who opened the season with three straight weekends of tourney play.
The first home game of the season is Butler's next match on Thursday against Dayton at 7 p.m. ET and will be played at Kuntz Stadium.
