Junior Nick Hegeman posted his third shutout in as many starts and Butler cruised to a 3-0 victory over Robert Morris in the first round of the Dayton Flyer Courtyard By Marriott Tournament in Dayton, Ohio, on Friday (Sept. 19). The defending champion Bulldogs will face Marshall in the final round on Sunday (Sept. 21).
Hegeman, getting his second consecutive start, keyed Butler's defense and helped the Bulldogs (4-1-1) record their fifth shutout in six matches this season. He had two saves in each period, while recording his fourth career shutout.
Junior Boris Gatzky gave the Bulldogs the lead for good just over 17 minutes into the contest. He took a pass from senior Frank Patano at the top of the box and fired a shot into the upper righthand corner of the net. It was his first goal of the season.
The Bulldogs struck again just seven minutes later when Patano, MVP of last year's Dayton Tournament, took a pass from sophomore Ben Sippola and blasted a shot past Robert Morris goalkeeper Matt Felice. It was Patano's fifth goal of the season.
Butler out-shot the Colonials (1-4-1), 22-10, in the match. The Bulldogs had a season-high 11 shots on goal and finished with a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Patano led the Bulldogs with seven shots, including three shots on goal.
The Bulldogs will try to capture a second consecutive Flyer Tournament crown on Sunday when they face Marshall at 12 noon at Baujan Field.
