Sophomore John Mariscalco scored his fourth goal of the season and junior Evan Reinhardt turned in a strong performance in goal to lead Butler in a 1-1 tie with host Indiana in a non-league men's soccer match at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Thursday night (Oct. 2). The deadlock left Butler with a 4-4-2 record on the season.
Both teams scored in the first half and then battled to a standoff through the second period and two overtime sessions, before settling for the tie. Indiana left the field with a 2-3-4 mark.
Mariscalco gave the Bulldogs the lead with an unassisted goal at 33:41 of the first period. It was his fourth goal of the season and his second in as many matches. The Hoosiers tied the contest just 19 seconds before halftime when Trey Meeker took a pass from Kevin Robson and converted his first goal of the season.
Reinhardt, who transferred to Butler from Indiana, turned in a stellar effort against his former teammates. He recorded a season-high nine saves in the match, including several key stops in the second half. Indiana attempted 12 shots in the second half and two in the second overtime period. The Hoosiers had 11 shots on goal in the contest.
Indiana had a 20-9 advantage in shots in the match, though Butler out-shot the home squad, 3-2, in the two overtime periods. The Bulldogs had just two shots on goal.
Butler returns to Indianapolis to open Horizon League play against UW-Green Bay on Sunday, Oct. 5. The match at Varsity Field will begin at 1 p.m.
