Senior forward Nick Pantazi scored two first half goals to lead Butler to a 2-0 non-conference victory over visiting Valparaiso at Varsity Field on Sunday, Oct. 6. The home field win lifted the Bulldogs to 4-7-1 on the year, while Valparaiso fell to 3-7-1.
Pantazi, who has scored goals in four of Butler's last five outings, nailed the game-winner just 20 minutes into the match. He fielded a corner kick from teammate Andrew Pancio and knocked a header into the right corner of the net. The Butler scoring leader then added a second goal at 42:01 with a shot from 12 yards out after taking a long pass from freshman Scott Olsen.
The two goals gave Pantazi eight for the season and 39 for his career. He moved into third place on Butler's all-time list for goals scored, just four goals behind Stephen Armstrong, 1996-99, in second place. Pantazi stands fourth in all-time points with 91.
Butler out-shot the Crusaders, 15-9, in the match. Senior Michael Mariscalco led the way with seven shots, including a couple at point-blank range. Pantazi had five shots and narrowly missed the "hat trick" when Valparaiso goalkeeper Marc Cilfone made a diving save on his header from directly in front of the net.
Cilfone, playing in just his third match this season, finished with six saves. Butler goalkeeper Grant Barrie, who improved to 4-6 on the year, was credited with five saves. Barrie stands third on Butler's all-time list for goalie saves with 203.
The Bulldogs will play another non-conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Cincinnati before returning to Horizon League play at home on Friday, Oct. 11, against Detroit.
