Junior John Mariscalco scored a goal midway through the second half, but that was all that Butler could muster while settling for a 1-1 tie against Cincinnati in a non-league match at Gettler Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 12. The outcome ended the Bulldogs' eight-match winning streak and left Butler with a 9-3-1 record on the year, while Cincinnati ended at 3-7-2.
Mariscalco's goal at 62:45 tied the match. He took a pass from teammate Andrew Pancio and blasted a shot into the back of the net from 30 yards out. The two squads then played 47 more scoreless minutes.
Cincinnati grabbed an early lead on an unassisted goal by Jeremiah Gallegos at 2:59. The Bulldogs failed to clear the ball on the play, and Gallegos knocked in a shot from 15 yards away.
The Bulldogs peppered Cincinnati goalkeeper Mike Vessells throughout the game, but couldn't slip another shot past the Bearcats' sophomore. Butler had a season-high 26 shots in the game, including 13 shots on goal! Senior Cory Edgington led the way with 10 shots, including eight shots on goal. The 10 shots matched the third-highest single match total in Butler men?s soccer history!
Butler attempted 11 shots in the first half and 10 in the second. The Bulldogs had five more attempts in the two overtime periods. Cincinnati had 20 shots, but just five shots on goal.
Vessells finished with 12 saves, while Butler goalkeeper Frank Peabody had four saves.
The Bulldogs return to Horizon League play at home with a match against Loyola on Friday, Oct. 15. The match at Varsity Field is slated for 3 p.m.
