Seniors Thulio Goncalves and Michael Mariscalco each scored a goal to lead Butler's men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over visiting IPFW in a non-league match at Varsity Field on Monday, Oct. 14. The win, Butler's second in a row, boosted the Bulldogs to 6-7-2 on the season, while IPFW fell to 2-11-1.
Goncalves nailed the game-winner less than four minutes into the match. The Butler midfielder finished a run that started with Mariscalco's pass to freshman Scott Olsen, who raced up the left side of the field. Olsen crossed the ball to Goncalves, who knocked a shot into the right corner of the net from five yards away. It was the first goal of the season for the Butler senior.
The Bulldogs continued to press the attack for much of the first half, but IPFW goalkeeper Peter Hachaj turned away four shots on goal. Butler finished the first half with a 13-1 advantage in shots.
The visiting Mastodons picked up the pace in the second half and threatened several times, but couldn't get a shot past Butler goalkeeper Grant Barrie. Mariscalco gave the Bulldogs an insurance goal with less than three minutes remaining in the match on a shot from five yards out in front of the net. The goal was Mariscalco's seventh this season and the 33rd of his Butler career.
Barrie, who had all three of his saves in the match in the second half, picked up his fourth shutout of the season, while boosting his record on the year to 6-6. He moved into a tie for third place on Butler's all-time list for shutouts with 11 for his career.
Butler had an 18-8 edge in shots for the match, with Mariscalco leading the way with nine attempts. Olsen picked up two assists in the contest, while Mariscalco had one. Seth Fishelson led IPFW with four shots, while Hachaj finished with six saves.
The Bulldogs return to Horizon League play on Thursday, Oct. 17, with a 4 p.m., match at Varsity Field against Loyola.
