Indianapolis - Junior David Giarratana scored his first goal of the season in the 25th minute to lead the Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory over the visitors from Eastern Illinois on Tuesday in Indianapolis. With another win over a non-conference foe, Butler improves their record to 11-2-2 overall and Eastern drops to 5-7-3 on the season.
Seniors Eduardo Garcia and Frank Patano each had two shots on goal for the Bulldogs, but it was Giarratana who found the back of the net. Junior Boris Gatzky took a free kick from right outside the eighteen yard box and struck the inside of the post. The ball was then directed off the goalkeeper and to Giarratana, who put it in the back of the net for the only goal of the game.
Both teams came out stronger and more physical in the second half. Eastern Illinois was issued two yellow cards in the final ten minutes of play, but the Bulldogs did not back down and showed great composure to defend the lead.
Junior goalkeeper Fabian Knopfler played all 90 minutes picking up three saves and the win for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will face Loyola Chicago this Friday at 1:30pm in the Butler Bowl.
