Junior Cory Edgington scored the final goal of the match with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half to lift visiting Butler to a 3-2 Horizon League victory over Cleveland State at Krenzler Field on Friday night (Oct. 24). The win boosted the Bulldogs to 8-6-3 overall and 4-1-1 in league play and set up a showdown at second place Detroit (4-1) on Sunday, Oct. 26.
Edgington capped off a high-scoring first half and broke a 2-2 tie with a header off a corner kick by teammate Andrew Pancio. It was Edgington's team-high seventh goal of the season.
Butler jumped to a 2-0 lead in the contest on early goals by sophomore Scott Olsen and Pancio. Both tallies came within the first 10 minutes of the match.
But Cleveland State, 6-10-1 overall and 2-4 in the Horizon League, stormed back to tie the match on goals by Stephen and Nic Ademolu. Stephen scored on a header at 19:52, and Nic tied the match at 36:26.
Both teams attempted just three shots in the final period. Two of Butler's second half shots were on target, but were saved by Vikings' goalkeeper Scott Deitz.
Junior Evan Reinhardt, coming off of back-to-back shutouts, went the distance in goal for the Bulldogs and finished with two saves. He earned his eighth victory of the season.
The Bulldogs will close out their Horizon League slate with Sunday's match at Detroit. A victory would assure Butler of the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Tournament, which begins on Nov. 8.
