Oct. 31, 2004
Junior Roberto Gallo scored a goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest to give visiting Butler a 2-1 victory over UW-Green Bay in the final regular season Horizon League match for both teams at Phoenix Field in Green Bay, Wis., on Sunday (Oct. 31). The win lifted the Bulldogs to 12-5-1 on the year, 6-1 in league play and gave Butler a share of the regular season title with UW-Milwaukee.
Gallo's clutch goal came off a free kick. Junior Scott Olsen played the ball to the far post and Gallo finished with a header to the back of the net. It was Gallo's fourth goal of the season and his second game-winner. The assist was Olsen's second of the match, and his team-high eighth of the season.
Butler grabbed an early lead in the crucial contest when senior Cory Edgington took a cross from Olsen and knocked a header past UW-Green Bay goalkeeper Pat Czuprynski. The goal, less than five minutes into the match, was the eighth of the season for Edgington, giving him a share of the team lead with Olsen.
UW-Green Bay (5-10-2, 2-4-1 HL) trailed 1-0 at halftime, but tied the match at 59:58 on shot from seven yards out by Brandon Steenlage. It was one of just three shots the Phoenix managed in the final 45 minutes.
The Bulldogs had a commanding 20-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Edgington led the Bulldogs with six shots, while Olsen, Gallo and junior John Mariscalco each had two shots on goal.
Butler senior goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt went the distance for the Bulldogs and improved to 8-4 on the season. He had two saves in the match. Czuprynski had six saves and the Phoenix had one team save.
UW-Milwaukee clinched the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Horizon League Tournament with a 1-0 overtime victory over Cleveland State. Butler will take the No. 2 seed into its opening tournament match at home on Saturday, Nov. 6.
