Sophomore Scott Olsen scored the game-winning goal less than five minutes into the first overtime period to give #2 Butler a 3-2 victory over #3 Detroit in the semifinals of the Horizon League Men's Soccer Championship at Engelmann Field in Milwaukee, Wis., on Friday, Nov. 14. The win sends the Bulldogs into the league championship match against #1 UW-Milwaukee on Sunday, Nov. 16.
Olsen ended the match at 94:37 with a shot from seven-yards out. The game-winning goal came after teammate Cory Edgington's shot caromed off the post. It was Olsen's fifth goal of the season, and his second game-winner of the season.
The Bulldogs, 12-6-3 and riding a seven-match winning streak, trailed 2-1 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the match, before senior Tony Beer tied the score at 79:18 with a header off of a free kick by Olsen. It was Beer's first goal of the season.
Detroit (8-9-2) took the first lead in the match on a goal by Ablaye Camara at 21:10. Butler tied the score at 1-1 on an unassisted goal by junior Cory Edgington at 44:15. It was Edgington's team-high tenth goal of the season.
The Titans took the lead again in the second half on a goal by George Kithas at 61:19, before Beer tied the contest.
Butler had 15 shots in the match, including eight shots on goal. Edgington and junior David Wyrick each attempted five shots. Detroit had 10 shots in the contest.
Goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt went the distance for the Bulldogs and picked up his 12th victory over the season. He had three saves in the match.
The Horizon League Championship match will be held at 12 noon (CDT) on Sunday. The winner of the league final earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
