Sophomore forward Kyle Pateros, who scored perhaps Butler's biggest goal of the season, has been named Horizon League Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the period of Oct. 6-12. It's the first time in his young career that he's received the league's weekly honor.
Pateros, a native of Janesville, Wis., nailed the game-winner in Butler's 1-0 upset of #4 UIC at the Butler Bowl. His decisive goal came in the 65th minute and handed UIC its first loss of the season. The victory gave Butler sole possession of first place in the Horizon League standings, one-half game ahead of second place Loyola.
The game-winning goal by Pateros came on a shot from 18 yards out on the right side of the goal. It was Pateros' sixth career goal and his first career game-winner. Senior Eduardo Garcia was creditd with an assist on the play.
The victory kept Butler unbeaten in three matches at the Butler Bowl. Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs dropped a 2-0 decision to #23 Indiana at Kuntz Stadium. Butler out-shot the Hoosiers, 12-10, in the match.
Butler (8-2-2, 3-0-1 Horizon League) will close out its four-match homestand with a non-league test against IUPUI at the Butler Bowl on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m.
