INDIANAPOLIS - Doubles play and the top of the lineup carried the Butler men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over Valparaiso Saturday at Butler. The Bulldogs got wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles to hold off the Crusaders.
Butler, now 3-3 in Horizon League play, will battle UIC Sunday, April 17 with the winner claiming the fourth seed in the upcoming Horizon League Men's Tennis Championships. Regardless, the Bulldogs and Flames will play each other to open the tournament.
Seniors Brandon Bayliss and Chris Herron and junior Zach Ervin won in the top three singles spots to secure the victory. Bayliss, 6-0 vs. Horizon League opponents, won at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-3. Herron and Ervin also each won in straight sets.
BU, with injured starter Stephen McLoughlin back in the lineup, won all three doubles contests. McLoughlin played with Herron at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-3. Bayliss teamed with usual partner Lenz Theodor for an 8-0 victory at No. 2, and Ervin and senior Ben Shafer won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
After BU's showdown vs. UIC, Butler will play Tuesday at home vs. IUPUI.
