COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Butler men's tennis team opened its 2012 spring season Wednesday morning at No. 3 Ohio State. The Bulldogs, who start four freshmen, dropped a 7-0 decision to the Buckeyes.
"We did OK taking a young team into there for a first match," head coach Jason Suscha said. "Our first serve percentage was too low, and that's something we can control. We should improve on that. It was a good experience for us to go in there and play a team like Ohio State."
Suscha cited freshmen Austin Woldmoe and Pulok Bhattacharya as bright spots, saying they "competed well."
OSU won the doubles point, led by the 15th-ranked combo of Ile Van Engelen and Devin McCarthy at No. 1. Van Engelen and McCarthy defeated Woldmoe and freshman Billy Weldon 8-2. The Dawgs were up a break at No. 3 doubles, but senior Zach Ervin and freshman Sam O'Neil would fall 8-5 to OSU's Williams and Metka.
Although the third-ranked Buckeyes swept the match, every BU player won at least two games in singles play. The player who had the most success in singles was freshman Bhattacharya, who lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
Butler (0-1) has nine days idle before it plays at Northern Illinois Friday, Jan. 27.
