The Butler men's tennis team defeated Bradley 4-3 this weekend to pick up its first dual victory of the season. The Bulldogs finished the weekend with a loss at nationall-ranked Drake.
BU won the doubles point and won at the top of the lineup to edge the Illinois BU team wearing red. Freshmen Austin Woldmoe and Tommy Marx won in the top two spots and another freshman, Billy Weldon, won at No. 5. Woldmoe cruised 6-1, 6-2 over Gabriel Townes at No. 1 and Marx won 6-3, 6-4 over Juan Diego Cuadrado.
Weldon's three-set win at No. 5 was the clinching
point for Butler. Weldon won the first set 6-3 but lost the second
6-0. He won the third set 6-4.
Weldon and Woldmoe combined to win 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Sam O'Neill and Pulok Bhattacharya won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
BU finished the weekend Saturday night at No. 62 Drake. Led by No. 73 singles player Anis Ghorbel, DU won 7-0 over Butler. Marx saw the most success for Butler, taking Jean Erasmus into a third-set tie-breaker at No. 2 singles.
Butler's next match is at Dayton Friday, March 2. The Bulldogs then play at No. 26 Indiana the next day.
