Butler won in the middle of the singles lineup, but the men's tennis team was edged at Dayton 4-3. The Bulldogs also took on 29th-ranked Indiana, losing 7-0.
Freshmen Tommy Marx and Billy Weldon and senior Zach Ervin won to keep the Bulldogs in the match against the Flyers. Marx won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Weldon went down a set and battled back at No. 5 singles. He won 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Ervin dominated in the third spot, winning 6-1, 6-0.
Ervin and Marx also nearly won as a team at No. 2 doubles. They were beaten in a tie-breaker 9-8 (4) by Robert Salcedo and Joe West.
The Bulldogs then took on the nation's 29th-ranked team, Indiana. Marx again played No. 2 singles and had the most success on the team by winning six games.
Butler's next match is Saturday, March 24 at Valparaiso. The Bulldogs are at UIC the next day.
