CHICAGO - Freshmen Pulok Bhattacharya and Billy Weldon won in three sets to clinch a 5-2 Butler men's tennis win at UIC on Sunday. BU won five of six in singles play to pick up the victory.
After being swept in doubles play, Butler owned the six singles contests against the Flames. Butler was up 3-2 when Bhattacharya and Weldon out-lasted their opponents. Bhattacharya, a native of India, beat Alan Reifer 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles for BU's fourth point. For good measure, Weldon bested UIC senior Nate Kirk 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7) at No. 5 singles.
Freshman Austin Woldmore won at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-1 and senior Zach Ervin won 6-4, 6-3 in the fourth spot. Freshman Tommy Marx won in straight sets at No. 2 6-2, 7-6 (7).
The win was a sort of revenge for the Bulldogs. UIC defeated Butler 4-3 in last year's Horizon League tourney.
Butler, which is now 2-0 in Horizon League play, will play at Ball State Thursday, March 29.
