MUNCIE, Ind. - Three Bulldogs picked up a pair of singles wins as the Butler men's tennis team concluded play at Ball State's fall invitational. Newcomers Tommy Marx, Sam O'Neill and Ruben Geeraert each picked up a pair of victories to lead BU.
The three freshmen were the only Dawgs to pick up multiple singles wins. O'Neill won the consolation bracket of the white division with two wins in the back draw. He defeated Duquesne's Mehdi Mekaoui in straight sets before defeating teammate Geeraert 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (6). Geeraert had previously won 6-1, 6-1 over Matt Smith from Duquesne and beat Northern Illinois player Bryant Wei 6-1, 5-6, 1-0 (6).
Marx, playing in Flight A, edged Louisville's Ross Nigro 6-3, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (7) and then beat Ball State's Zane Smith 7-6 (4), 6-1. He fell in the Flight A consolation semifinals to Green Bay's Michael Tenzer.
Butler also saw flashes of success in the doubles Flight A, picking up what would be two conference doubles wins. Marx and senior Stephen McLoughlin paired for a 9-7 win against a duo from Green Bay and freshmen Billy Weldon and Austin Woldmoe won 8-2 over another Phoenix combo.
Butler has one final fall tournament on the schedule, Oct. 14-16 at Louisville. The ITA Regionals are Oct. 20-23 in Knoxville, Tenn.
