INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler men's tennis team jumped out to an early lead and freshman Austin Woldmoe clinched the team win at No. 1 singles to push BU past Youngstown State 4-2 in the first round of the Horizon League Men's Tennis Championship.
No. 6 seed Butler's win over YSU was the first time a No. 6 seed has beaten a No. 3 seed in tournament history. The Bulldogs advance to play No. 2 seed Green Bay Saturday afternoon at Indy Racquet Club East.
"We played tough today," head coach Jason Suscha said after the win. "We are happy to still be playing."
Butler won the doubles point, taking victories at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Woldmoe and Billy Weldon won 8-4 at No. 1 and Stephen McLoughlin and Sam O'Neill won 8-5 in the third spot.
Freshman Pulok Bhattacharya then made quick work of Max Schmerin at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-2. After McLoughlin won at No. 6, BU was in control with Woldmoe and Marx both in control of their matches. Woldmoe finished Tariq Ismail at No. 1 in three sets to clinch the match 4-2. Marx was up in the third set when the dual match was complete.
