KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Two Butler doubles teams won twice in the main draw and freshman Tommy Marx picked up a singles victory to highlight the first day of action at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional at the University of Tennessee.
Senior Zach Ervin and freshman Sam O'Neill combined for a pair of doubles wins against SEC opponents. The two Bulldogs opened play with an 8-2 win over Vanderbilt's Suresh Eswaran and Michael Retta, then they beat Tennessee's Jarryd Chaplin and Peter Nagovnak 8-6. Ervin and O'Neill will play in the main draw doubles quarterfinals against a team from Kentucky.
Also winning two doubles matches was freshman duo Billy Weldon and Austin Woldmoe. Weldon and Woldmoe beat Alex Doherty and Austin Sansone from Ball State 9-7 before rolling to an 8-2 win over a team from Belmont. The two freshmen will play David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury of Memphis in the quarterfinals.
Marx was the only Butler player to win in the singles main draw, winning 6-4, 7-5 over Jorge Varon from East Tennessee State. Woldmoe, Ervin, O'Neill and freshman Pulok Bhattacharya will play in the consolation draw this weekend.
