LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Three freshmen - Tommy Marx, Austin Woldmoe and Billy Weldon - each went 2-1 in singles to lead the Butler men's tennis team at the Louisville Invitational. Senior Zach Ervin also won two singles matches and two doubles matches with freshman Sam O'Neill.
Marx, a freshman from Shaker Heights, Ohio, fared the best in the Flight A singles bracket. He won his first two matches in straight sets before falling to Xavier's Jimmy Roebker in three sets. Marx's two wins came against Belmont's Renato Antun and Adam Donaldson of Louisville.
Woldmoe beat his first opponent, Morehead State's Seve Day, in three sets before falling to Van Damrongsri of Louisville. Woldmoe then won a match later over another player from Louisville. Weldon won 6-3, 6-2 over Xavier's Freddy Abunku in the B Flight singles tourney but lost in the second round. He added a 6-0, 6-2 win over Wright State's Sean Yun later in the weekend.
Ervin was strong, going 2-1 in singles play in addition to a 2-1 double mark with O'Neill. After losing in the first round of the B Flight doubles bracket, Ervin and O'Neill won 8-3 over a duo from Belmont and then beat a team from Wright State by the same score.
The Butler men's tennis team will send players to the ITA Ohio Valley Regional in Knoxville, Tenn., next week.
