INDIANAPOLIS - After winning twice at No. 1 singles over the weekend, freshman Austin Woldmoe has been named Horizon League Men's Tennis Player of the Week. It is the first career honor for the Fishers, Ind., native.
Woldmoe started the weekend with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 1 over Valparaiso's Chris Baum on Saturday. BU defeated Valpo 5-2 in what was the league opener for both teams. The next day in Chicago, Woldmoe defeated UIC's Alexander Raa 6-4, 6-1 to lead Butler to another 5-2 win.
"I think it's a well-deserved honor," head coach Jason Suscha said. "Anytime you can win at No. 1 singles - especially as a freshman - it's an accomplishment. Our schedule has been so tough so there haven't been opportunities for wins, so I'm glad Austin took advantage."
Woldmoe was also 1-1 playing with teammate Billy Weldon at No. 1 doubles. Woldmoe and Weldon won 8-5 at Valparaiso but lost in doubles play at UIC.
Woldmoe's performances helped the Bulldogs to a 2-0 start in Horizon League play. BU will play three times this week, at Ball State on Thursday before hosting IUPUI and Detroit Saturday, March 31.
