FAIRFIELD, Ohio - Sophomore Billy Weldon won at No. 6 singles to lead the Butler men's tennis team at Xavier. The Musketeers won the match 6-1.
Weldon defeated Freddy Abunku at the bottom of the lineup 7-5, 30 (retired). Abunku retired after being down two breaks in the second set.
Xavier was deeper and more solid all-around than us," head coach Parker Ross said. "We have been coming up short in doubles lately after starting off the year strong; our doubles effort definitely needs to improve."
The other Bulldog who made a strong showing was sophomore Pulok Bhattacharya at No. 2 singles. He took the undefeated Mesa Mei into a third-set tie-breaker, but fell just short.
"Pulok played a good match. He almost had him," Ross said.
Xavier (9-1) won at every other spot. Weldon and classmate Austin Woldmoe were in a tie-breaker at No. 1 doubles but the match went unfinished.
Butler's next match is Friday, Feb. 22 at home vs. Dayton.
