Bottom Of Lineup Lifts Dawgs Past NIU
INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler men's tennis showed some strong depth on Saturday, dominating play at the bottom of the singles lineup for a 5-2 win over Northern Illinois.
Playing Nos. 4-6 singles, respectively, Sam O'Neill, Billy Weldon and Brandon Woods each picked up singles wins and Austin Woldmoe won at No. 1 singles. The Bulldogs also won the doubles point, the first time they've done that since Feb. 1 vs. ASA College.
O'Neill and Woods each outlasted his opponent in three sets and Weldon cruised at No. 5 singles. O'Neill won 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 and Woods won a third-set tie-breaker after the Bulldogs had clinched 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. Weldon rolled 6-1, 6-0 in the fifth spot, his seventh victory over the last nine matches. Weldon is now a team-best 14-8 in singles play this year.
Woldmoe handled NIU's top player, Axel Langerlof of Sweden, 6-4, 7-5. The Bulldogs dominated doubles play, winning at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Woldmoe and Weldon rolled 8-3 at the top doubles position and O'Neill and Woods won 8-2 at No. 3. Butler was leading 7-2 at No. 2 doubles when the point was clinched.
Butler's home weekend continues Sunday morning when it hosts IUPUI.
