MUNCIE, Ind. - Sam O'Neill and Billy Weldon picked up singles victories as the Butler men's tennis team lost a close 5-2 decision at Ball State.
With Butler down 3-0 in the dual, O'Neill and Weldon won to put heat on the Cardinals. Two courts remained and each went three sets.
O'Neill won 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 against Dalton Albertin and Weldon out-lasted Imanol Arconada 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. With Butler within 3-2, Ball State answered with wins at Nos. 1 and 6 singles to finish the win.
Head coach Parker Ross had to shuffle his lineup at the last minute as Austin Woldmoe was unable to play singles due to injury. He played with Weldon in his usual spot at No. 1 doubles before sitting out the rest of the evening. Everyone bumped up a spot, with Pulok Bhattacharya playing at No. 1. Freshman Andres Maynez moved into the sixth spot and played well in a three-set loss to BSU's Austin Smith.
Butler (8-8) will return to the court Sunday, March 24 at Western Michigan. Just one home match remains, and April 20 bout against Cleveland State.
