INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler men's tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches with a 6-1 victory over ASA College on Friday. Butler won doubles play and five of six singles contests.
"I'm proud of our young team's effort the last two weekends," head coach Parker Ross said. "We won some tough matches and had some character-building wins. We're not satisfied yet and we are excited about our challening upcoming matches and to hopefully get a Big Ten win at Iowa."
After controlling doubles action to lead 1-0, Sam O'Neill won in straight sets at No. 4 singles. At that point, the Bulldogs owned a 2-1 lead after ASA, a junior college out of New York, won at No. 1 singles.
Four Bulldogs would go on to win in three sets. Pulok Bhattacharya outlasted Nail Khabiyev in a feisty match at No. 2 and No. 3 singles player Tommy Marx won to get Butler the match-clinching fourth point. At the bottom of the lineup, Brandon Woods and Billy Weldon each got out to an early lead and hung on to win in three sets.
Butler has won its last three dual matches - all at home - over the last week. Before taking on ASA College, BU scored 4-3 wins over Eastern Kentucky and Northern Kentucky.
Bhattacharya and Weldon are currently leading the team with 10 singles wins each. Weldon is 10-6 and Bhattacharya is 10-9. The team's top doubles duo, Weldon and Austin Woldmoe, are leading the team with a 12-7 doubles record.
