COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2014 indoor tennis season got underway Wednesday as the men's tennis team traveled to the Varsity Tennis Center to face No. 5 Ohio State in a head-to-head matchup. The nationally-ranked Buckeyes defeated Butler 7-0.
Brandon Woods and Sam O'Neill made up Butler's No. 1 Doubles team in the season opener, but the tandem fell 6-0 to the pairing of Kevin Metka and Ralf Steinbach. The No. 2 Doubles match gave OSU the point as Alex and Austin Woldmoe dropped the decision 6-2.
Tommy Marx and Andres Maynez were also in doubles action for Butler as they faced Hunter Callahan and Herkko Pollanen in No. 3 Doubles. The score was 4-3 in favor of Ohio State before the stoppage (UF).
The bottom of the lineup was the first to finish in singles competition as Tommy Marx took a 6-0, 6-1 setback at the No. 5 spot and Alex Woldmoe was defeated 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
O'Neill dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match to Pollanen at No. 2 Singles and Brandon Woods was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by his opponent in No. 4 Singles.
Pulok Bhattacharya opened up the year as Butler's No. 1 Singles player. He took a 6-2, 6-1 loss to No. 31 Peter Kobelt.
The final match of the day came down between Austin Woldmoe and Chris Diaz in No. 3 Singles. Diaz earned a 6-2, 6-0 win to give the Buckeyes the sweep.
The 2014 home opener is coming up next for Butler as the men's tennis team hosts Youngstown State on Friday, Jan. 24. The event will begin at 3 p.m.
