ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Butler men's tennis team was defeated by Northern Illinois on Thursday night by the final score of 7-0. With the loss, the team drops to 5-3 while the Huskies improved to 8-3 overall which includes an 8-0 record at the Boylan Tennis Center.
BU played against one of the top doubles team in the nation with Don Amir and Axel Lagerlof currently being ranked 37th. Sam O'Neill and Billy Weldon took on the challenge in No. 1 Doubles, but they were defeated 8-4 on court one.
The point would go to Northern Illinois after the final serve at No. 3 Doubles as the brother tandem of Alex and Austin Woldmoe were defeated by Matt Lynch and Jovan Zeljkovic 8-6.
Two tiebreakers and a three-set win allowed NIU to pull off the sweep. The highly competitive matches came at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 Singles. After taking a 6-2 loss early, O'Neill came back to claim a 6-2 win of his own at No. 2 singles, sending the match to a decisive third set. Lagerlof came up with the clutch shots as he went on to win 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Austin Woldmoe and Marx were each involved in the tiebreakers. Woldmoe was shut out in the first set vs. Amir, but battled back to win set two 7-5. He was hit with a loss at No. 3 Singles after he lost the tiebreaker 10-8.
Marx's match ended in a similar fashion as he was also defeated 10-8 in the tiebreaker. His breakdown went 6-1, 6-7, 10-8.
