FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Butler Bulldog men's tennis team recorded a 4-3 victory at IPFW on Wednesday to improve to 9-7 overall. The 'Dogs earned the doubles point early in the match which ended up being the game-winning point as each school recorded three single victories.
The Mastodons put the pressure on Butler with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Daniel Kang and Andres Cobos defeated the tandem of Austin Woldmoe and Billy Weldon. The turning point in the action came at No. 3 doubles as Brandon Woods and Pulok Bhattacharya evened the score with an 8-6 win over Karl Wangensten-Oye and Connor Andrews.
With each team recording one doubles win, all eyes turned to No. 2 doubles were Tommy Marx and Sam O'Neill faced Martin Muadi and Gerard Guell. Butler earned the point with another close 8-6 win over the 'Dons.
Butler took care of business early in singles competition earning three quick wins at the bottom of the order to earn the win. Woods was the first 'Dog to finish as he won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. Marx put BU on the cusp of a win with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles and the match would be decided after a 6-3, 6-2 win from Weldon at No. 6.
IPFW ended up winning all three matches at the top of the order, but two of the three were very close. Kang took down Austin Woldmoe in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1. Cobos knocked off Bhattacharya at No. 2 6-3, 1-6, 10-3 and another tiebreaker went to the Mastodons with a 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 win from Guell over O'Neill.
