FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The Butler men's tennis team took a 4-2 loss to Xavier in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament. Xavier entered the weekend as the No. 4 seed while Butler was a tough matchup earning the No. 5 seed.
The day started off well for Butler who was able to earn the doubles point by earning wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Brandon Woods and Pulok Bhattacharya won the first matchup of the day with an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. The Musketeers evened the playing field with an 8-6 win at No. 3, but the Bulldogs came up with a clutch 8-7 win at No. 1 doubles behind the solid play from Sam O'Neill and Billy Weldon.
Butler was ultimately defeated after only winning one singles match. The lone winner was Tommy Marx who posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
Sam O'Neill pushed his opponent to three sets, but was eventually defeated 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3. Bhattacharya lost 6-0, 6-2 at No.1, Austin Woldmoe fell 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 and Woods rounded out the action with a 7-6, 6-3 setback at No. 4.
