Kalamazoo, Mich. - Butler was met with some tough competition in its spring opener on Friday (Jan. 11), as No. 59 Western Michigan dealt the Bulldogs a 7-0 defeat at the West Hill Athletic Club.
The Bulldogs received strong efforts at singles from three of their freshman players. Chris Herron battled the Bronco's Michael Calderone in a tough two-set match at the No. 3 spot, while Bryce Warren (No. 4) and Brandon Bayliss (No. 6) each forced third sets before coming up short.
Butler's No. 1 doubles tandem of Herron and senior Eric Breitenbach, as well as the No. 3 duo of Sam Brown and Bayliss, also put up solid showings in their first dual meet competition of the year with a pair of 8-5 showings.
The Bulldogs will have little rest before taking on Big Ten foe Michigan State on Saturday (Jan. 12) beginning at 11:00 a.m.
