Indianapolis, Ind. - The Bulldogs swept through doubles play for the first point of the match before securing victories at No. 1, 2 and 4 singles, as Butler notched its first dual meet win of the season in the home opener against Illinois State, 4-3, on Saturday (Feb. 9) afternoon.
Butler put together a dominant showing in doubles play against the Redbirds, winning all three bouts to claim the doubles point.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Eric Breitenbach and freshman Chris Herron took on a tough foe in Daniel Tobar and Luka Marinkovic, who entered the match undefeated and ranked 47th in Division I, but the Butler tandem worked an 8-6 decision for their second victory of the spring.
Sophomore Ben Raynauld and freshman Bryce Warren earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 over Nuno Jacinto and Xavier Riart-Ferrer, while freshman Brandon Bayliss and senior Sam Brown scored an 8-6 victory over Oscar Beich and Michael Hobson in the No. 3 bout.
The Bulldogs continued to find success in singles competition, as Warren worked a convincing 7-5, 6-3 decision over Tobar at No. 4 before Raynauld added a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 2 against Jacinto.
Beich put the Redbirds on the board with a win at No. 3, but Breitenbach came through in the clutch at No. 1 singles, gutting out a three-set, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win against Marinkovic to seal the match.
Butler returns to action on Feb. 20 when they host Xavier beginning at 3:00 p.m.
