Bulldogs Fall Short At Xavier, 5-2
Cincinnati, Ohio - Sophomore Brandon Bayliss and freshman Zach Ervin each picked up three-set victories in singles competition, but the Bulldogs would come up short in the team scoring as host Xavier pulled out a 5-2 decision over Butler on Tuesday (Feb. 17) afternoon.
Bayliss battled back from an opening set defeat at the No. 4 singles spot, rallying for a 6-4 decision in the second frame before scoring a 10-5 win in the tiebreaker. Ervin, meanwhile, responded from a first-set loss to even the bout with a 6-2 triumph at the second set before holding on for a 10-7 tiebreaker win.
Sophomore Lenz Theodor battled through grueling No. 6 singles bout, falling just short of an early advantage in a 7-6 (0) opening set before evening the bout with a 6-4 win in the second. The tiebreaker would go the way of the Musketeers, however, as the Bulldog newcomer came out on the short-end of a 10-4 set.
Sophomore Bryce Warren also forced a third set, rallying for a 6-2 win in the second set before falling in the deciding frame.
Butler returns to Indianapolis this weekend when it hosts Tennessee State on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 10:00 a.m. before battling Toledo on Sunday (Feb. 22) at 10:00 a.m.
