Indianapolis, Ind. - The Butler men's tennis team put together some strong performances in singles play but was unable to get the points it needed for the victory, as visiting Xavier edged the Bulldogs, 4-3, at the Butler Bubble on Wednesday (Feb. 20).
The No. 2 doubles team of Ben Raynauld and Bryce Warren scored the first win of the night for Butler, topping Brian Starr and J.T. Torbeck, 8-6, to even the doubles scoring at one match a piece. The Bulldogs would fall just short of scoring the first point of the bout, as Eric Breitenbach and Chris Herron fell in a close 9-8 (5) match to Chris Herrlinger and Doug Matthews at the No. 1 position.
Butler battled back, as Raynauld worked a strong 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles before Herron scored a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 4. Warren staked himself to an early lead at No. 3 singles, winning the first set 7-5, but was unable to hold on for the win.
Brandon Bayliss brought the scoring even at 3-3 with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5, but it would not be enough as the Musketeers tallied the deciding point at No. 6.
Butler returns to action on Friday (Feb. 22) when they host a double-header with Duquesne at 12:00 noon and Bradley at 4:00 p.m.
