Indianapolis, Ind. - The Butler men's tennis team swept past Indiana State for the doubles point before scoring decisions at the bottom four singles spots to claim a 5-2 victory over the visiting Sycamores on Wednesday (March 18) afternoon at the Butler Bubble.
Rain forced the contest indoors after just a few games played on the outdoor courts, but the Bulldogs were unaffected by the change in scenery, rolling to wins in all three doubles bouts.
The No. 3 tandem of Ben Raynauld and Lenz Theodor got things started with an 8-0 sweep, before the No. 1 duo of Bryce Warren and Stephen McLoughlin and the No. 2 team of Chris Herron and Zach Ervin both picked up 8-4 decisions to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the match.
ISU responded with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but wins in the bottom four positions provided Butler with the difference in the contest.
Brandon Bayliss and McLoughlin each notched 6-2, 6-2 wins, with the former's coming at the No. 4 position and the latter scoring his at No. 6. Ervin added a 6-1, 6-4 decision at the No. 5 spot, while Herron tallied the team's final point at No. 3 with a gutsy 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-0) triumph.
Butler returns to action on Friday (March 20) when it heads to Bloomington, Ill., for a 3:00 p.m. match against Illinois State.
