Normal, Ill. - Ben Raynauld and Lenz Theodor teamed up for a strong win at No. 2 doubles before each tallying a victory in singles play, but the visiting Bulldogs came up on the short-end to host Illinois State, as the Redbirds claimed a 5-2 decision on Friday (March 20) afternoon.
Raynauld and Theodor scored an 8-6 decision at the second doubles spot, topping Illinois State's Michael Hobson and Timon Reichelt. ISU would claim decisions in the remaining two bouts, however, to earn the first point of the match.
Raynauld then got things started in singles play, working a swift 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Timon at the top spot. Theodor added an impressive showing at No. 6, defeating Micah LeMoine, 6-2, 6-4.
Butler had a chance to climb back into the bout, as Brandon Bayliss and Zach Ervin scored opening-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, but the Redbirds would respond in the final two sets for the points. Stephen McLoughlin, meanwhile, battled back from first set loss to even the bout at 1-1 before succumbing in the deciding round.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday, March 27, when it heads to Detroit, Mich., for a 10:00 a.m. bout with the Titans.
