League Unbeaten Streak Ends, As UIC Tops Bulldogs, 4-3

April 18, 2008

Results

Chicago, Ill. - The Bulldogs' success in doubles competition had played a major role in how the team fared this season, and trend continued at UIC on Friday (April 18) afternoon, as Butler came up short of the doubles point before falling in a 4-3 match to the Flames.

The defeat hands the Bulldogs their first in Horizon League play since 1996, ending Butler's streak of consecutive dual meet wins at 49.

The Bulldogs scored a win at No. 2 doubles, as Ben Raynauld and Brandon Bayliss scored a 9-7 decision over Eric Fey and Sebastian Lystad. Butler would be unable to pick up the deciding bout, however, as UIC tallied an 8-5 decision at No. 3 before holding on for a 9-7 victory at No. 1.

Eric Breitenbach and Raynauld gave the Bulldogs a strong effort in the top two singles positions, as Breitenbach worked a 6-1, 7-5 win over Adriano Liccardo at No. 1 and Raynauld notched a swift 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 over Lystad.

Bayliss held off Fey at the No. 4 spot, working a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 decision, but the Bulldogs would fall short in the final tally as UIC scored two-set wins at No. 3, 5 and 6.

Butler ends the regular season with a 5-1 record in league play. The Horizon League Championship begins on Friday, April 25, at the North Central High School tennis courts.
