Indianapolis, Ind. - The No. 3 seeded Butler men's tennis team got off to a strong start in the Horizon League Championship on Friday (April 24) afternoon, claiming two quick doubles wins before notching three-straight victories in singles competition to pick up a 4-0 decision over No. 6 Valparaiso at the North Central High School Tennis Courts.
Ben Raynauld and Lenz Theodor got things started at No. 2 doubles, scoring an 8-4 win over Adam Whitmer and Kevin Deherrera. Chris Herron and Brandon Bayliss followed with an 8-4 decision of their own at No. 3, topping Kyle Stump and Phidias Fortune to clinch the first point of the match.
In singles play, Bryce Warren kicked things off with a swift 6-2, 6-1 triumph at the No. 2 spot over Tom Litscher to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, Bayliss chimed in with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Deherrera at No. 4 before Zach Ervin closed out the competition on a strong note with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Stump at No. 5.
The Bulldogs move on to face No. 2 seeded UIC on Saturday (April 25) beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the North Central High School Tennis Courts with the right to play in the championship match on the line.
