Bulldogs Oust Valpo Before Falling To UIC

April 26, 2008

Valparaiso Match Results | UIC Match Results

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Butler men's tennis team made quick work of Valparaiso in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championship on Saturday (April 26) morning, scoring a 4-0 sweep of the Crusaders to advance, but UIC ended the Bulldogs' title bid in the afternoon with a 4-0 decision

Butler will advance to face Green Bay in the third-place match on Sunday (April 27) at 9:00 a.m.

The Bulldogs earned the first point against the Crusaders with a pair of quick victories in doubles play. Eric Breitenbach and Chris Herron picked up an 8-3 win at No. 1, while Ben Raynauld and Bryce Warren duplicated the effort at No. 2 with an 8-3 decision.

Butler continued to thrive in singles, claiming two-set wins at the top three positions. Herron worked a swift 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3, Breitenbach scored a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 1 and Raynauld closed out the match at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph.

The Bulldogs squared off with UIC just hours later, a team that handed Butler its only league defeat in the regular season.

Breitenbach and Herron once again teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles by an 8-4 margin, but UIC evened the scoring with a decision at No. 3, leaving the point up to the victor of the deciding No. 2 bout.

The Bulldogs would fall just short in the final doubles match, however, as the Flames worked a 9-8 (3) win.

UIC would push its advantage out to 3-0 with victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, but the Bulldogs keep things interesting in the remaining four bouts. Butler claimed opening-set triumphs at 1, 2, 3 and 5, but the Flames would answer with second-set decisions in all four battles before notching the deciding point at No. 2.
