Butler Battles But Comes Up Short To No. 5 Notre Dame
May 11, 2007
South Bend, Ind. - Butler, in its sixth-consecutive NCAA Championship appearance, but up a fight early on, but No. 5 Notre Dame proved to be too much, as the Irish topped the Bulldogs, 4-0, in first round at the Courtney Tennis Courts on Friday (May 11).
Eric Breitenbach and Sandy Berry put together a strong showing in the early going at No. 2 doubles, jumping out to a 4-1 lead before Notre Dame rallied back to tie the match at 6-6. The bout would end unfinished, however, as the Irish claimed the No. 1 and No. 3 wins for the doubles point.
Breitenbach continued to impress in singles play, as the junior notched a first set win at No. 2 before falling in the second. Much like the doubles match, his run would end prematurely, as Notre Dame claimed quick wins at No. 1, 4 and 6.
The Bulldogs finish the year at 14-10 in dual meets.
