HOME STRETCH: The Butler men's tennis team will begin a four-meet homestand this weekend. The Bulldogs will host Horizon League foe UW-Green Bay on Friday (Feb. 22) at 4 p.m. and will welcome the league's newest member, Youngstown State, to the Butler Bubble on Saturday (Feb. 23) at 2 p.m.
SPLIT DECISION: The Bulldogs split two non-conference meets this past weekend. Butler defeated Toledo 4-3 on Saturday (Feb. 16) before falling to Western Michigan, 6-1, on Sunday (Feb. 17). The Bulldogs currently stand at 5-6 overall and 1-0 in league action.
DOUBLE DUTY: Butler picked up victories in all three doubles matches against Toledo, to enter singles play with a 2-0 advantage. In No. 1 doubles, seniors Brandon Currie and Jimmy Borendame escaped with a 9-8 (3) victory over the Rockets' Pete Baghadti and Khadid Al Nabhani. The tandem of Josh Rey and Peter Voelz defeated Dipesh Rao and Alex Farron-Mahon 8-5 in No. 2 doubles, while Abel Contreras and Aubrey Annan knocked off Tony Tran and Todd Wojtkowski 8-5 in the No. 3 slot.
CURRIE'S COOKIN': Senior Brandon Currie improved his singles record to 14-8 this season by posting a pair of wins on the weekend. In No. 1 singles, the Milwaukee, Wis. native defeated Toledo's Dipesh Rao 6-3, 6-2 and then beat Western Michigan's Ravi Pathanjali 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (3) the following afternoon. Currie maintains an 11-7 record in doubles play.
HOME BASE: The Butler women's tennis team, which is in the midst of a three-meet homestand, will host instate rival Indiana State on Sunday (Feb. 24) at 9 a.m. at the Butler Bubble.
BULLDOGS CAPTURE FIRST WIN: The Bulldogs captured their first win of the young 2002 season by posting a 6-1 non-conference victory over Evansville on Feb. 17. A day prior, Butler had lost to Toledo, 2-5. The Bulldogs currently maintain a 1-4 overall record.
AN 'A' FOR EFFORT: Senior Amy Steiner and sophomore Annie Gantz each recorded a singles victory in Butler's 5-2 loss to Toledo. Steiner defeated the Rockets' Monica Ribero 6-4, 1-0 in No. 1 singles, while Gantz posted a 6-0, 7-5 win over Eve Such in No. 5 singles.
SINGLED OUT: After losing each of their doubles matches and falling behind 1-0 to Western Michigan, Butler came on strong in singles play to sweep all six matches. Amy Steiner, Christina Laun, Molly Figel, Laurel Clements, Annie Gantz and Jaci Hoffman each came away with a victory against the Aces.
