Men's Tennis Prepares For Season-Opening Tournament

Sept. 10, 2008

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Butler men's tennis team opens up the fall campaign this weekend when it takes part in the Indiana Invitational from Friday, Sept. 12, to Sunday, Sept. 14, in Bloomington, Ind.

Head coach Jason Suscha returns for his 12th season at the helm of the Butler men's tennis team after guiding the Bulldogs to a third-place finish in the 2008 Horizon League Championship. Although Butler will lack the presence of any senior player on the roster, the five-time league coach of the year will have a pair of all-league players returning for 2008-09 in first team member Ben Raynauld and newcomer of the year Brandon Bayliss.

Raynauld returns for his junior season after compiling a 19-18 overall singles record and a 4-2 slate in league play, while Bayliss begins his sophomore season after registering a 17-14 singles mark and a perfect 6-0 record against conference foes.

Sophomores Chris Herron and Bryce Warren round out the group of returning starters for the 2008-09 campaign, with both players picking up 12 singles wins each last season.

"With no seniors and only one junior, we are very excited about the future," Suscha said. Retuning starters Raynauld, Warren, Herron and Bayliss all had excellent summers and are looking forward to our challenging fall schedule."

The Bulldogs also bring in a trio of newcomers with impressive credentials. Zach Ervin, a 6-1 freshman from Muncie, Ind., had a top-40 singles ranking and a top-10 doubles ranking in the USTA Midwest Region, while Stephen McLoughlin, a 6-2 freshman from Toronto, Ont., ranked in the top-10 in the Ontario Tennis Association. Lenz Theodor, a 5-9 sophomore from Jakarta, Indonesia, also joins the Bulldogs this year after earning the top rating among Indonesia juniors and a 285 ITF ranking.

"We are excited for all three additions to the men's team," Suscha added. "They bring excellent athleticism to compliment their all-around games. All three should have an impact in both singles and doubles."
